Frequently Asked Questions                                                      FEDERAL TAX ID NUMBER: 262-373434

What is your Tax ID number ?
262-373434

How do I register?
We use Ultracamp online registration. Click here.   Have a question?  Feel free to email Don at don@jordanlakeboatingcamp.com.

What are the age cut-offs?

  • For Junior Boating Camp, your child must be 7 and a real trooper.  It is a very full, fun day.  Ages 7-8.
  • For Jordan Lake Boating Camp, your child must be 9. Ages 9-12.
  • If on the cusp between the two camps, please email me - we can usually make it work.
  • If you have two children and the older one has "aged-out" (is age 13+) then they may have the option to become a CILT (however, there are very few spots available, and they'd need to be fully "onboard" with the program -  see details)

What time can I drop off my child?
Camp hours are 9:00am-4:00pm.  Drop off is at 9:00am.  Early Drop off starts at 8:00am and is available to add-on at check out.

Will I be able to pick up my child early from camp?

Please read "Important Policies" at bottom of this page.

Does my child need to be able to swim?

Your child doesn't need to be a proficient swimmer, as they wear their life jacket all day.   See full swimming explanation here.

Please note that most activities involve swimming, getting wet, etc.  If they "don't want to get into the water," then it is going to be a llloooonnnggg week.

What if my child doesn't like to get wet?

See explanation at bottom of this page.

What if my child has a previous injury/infection that can't get wet under doctors orders?

See explanation at bottom of this page.

What should my child bring?

  • Please carefully read this list and prepare your child for success.  We are outdoors 98% of the time, and participants must bring appropriate clothing and footwear.   Please LABEL EVERYTHING otherwise it eventually makes its way to lost and found or may go home with another camper.
  • Campers should come wearing bathing suits. (They will wear a bathing suit 100% of the time at camp)
  • SPF 30+ Sunscreen.  Please arrive in the morning with a good base coat already applied.
  • Refillable water bottle clearly marked with your child's name.  (We have ice-cold RO water to refill - every precaution will be taken to make sure your children are well hydrated and are not exposed to too much sun)
  • Sun shirts ("rash guard").  Some type of shirt must be worn under lifejacket, no bare shoulders.
  • SUN HATS with wide brims are required to be worn from 10am-2pm.
  • Sunglasses (with strap, e.g. "Croakies")
  • Water shoes (NOT just gym shoes that can get wet)  Cheap "aqua socks" are at Walmart for $10. Tevas, Chacos, Keens.  Crocs are not great, because they ALWAYS slip off in water or running while wet.  No flip flops, they just come off, or sink.
  • Healthy packed lunch (NO PEANUTS OR TREE NUTS PERMITTED) that is stored in your child's backpack until lunchtime.
  • Mid-morning and mid-afternoon snacks - we burn lots of calories (NO PEANUTS OR TREE NUTS PERMITTED)
  • Extra set of clothes
  • Towel
  • Optional:
  • Bug spray (Lotion, not aerosol)
  • If you already have a life jacket that your kid is very comfortable in, please write name in magic marker and bring it. Otherwise we have comfortable ski-style jackets for kids of all shapes and sizes.
  • If your child already has a fishing pole and lures that they love, then please label with duct tape and magic marker and bring it!   No BIG tackle boxes please.  No open reels or baitcasters though (FYI: we don't re-spool reels when they "bird nest" - not if.
We do provide gear, but if your child really loves to fish, it will maximize their enjoyment and fishing time if they leave their gear onboard for the week.

What NOT to Bring!

  • Please NO AEROSOL SPRAY sunscreen or bug spray
  • Electronic devices, including game machines, tablet computers or phones.
  • No iPhone watches with cell phones
  • Any other toys from home.
  • Pocket knives
  • Filet knives in tackle box
  • Flip flop shoes (they just fall off and get lost in water)
  • Open Reel or Baitcaster fishing rods/reels unless your child is already a pro.  (FYI - We don't have time to re-spool reels when they "bird nest", not if)
  • Anything really expensive, sentimental or special: examples: great-great grandfather's fishing pole, who knows? (things have a way of getting sat on, wet, falling overboard, etc - it is summer camp after all)

What is your staff ratio?
5:1 camper to counselor ratio or better!

Who are the counselors?
Captain Don works with a great crew of school teachers, college students, other adults who love boating, fishing and sharing their knowledge and enjoyment with children!   Background and DMV checks are required for all staff.  Van driver is minimum age of 21 (often much, much older!)

Can parents participate?

Oh, wouldn't that be fun!  Unfortunately, there is not enough room on the boats.  Plus logistics are challenging enough as it is - we move from place to place as the weather and itinerary dictates.  Sorry.

Are there discounts?
Yes!  Multi-week and multi-sibling discounts are automatically applied at the time of check out when you use the Ultracamp registration system.

Is there a payment plan available?
Yes, you can select the payment plan during checkout.  A $75 non-refundable deposit is required to register, then the balance is split into equal monthly payments and charged on 12/15, 1/15, 2/15, 3/15, 4/15 with the final payment due May 15th.

PLEASE NOTE: your first installment will be charged on the 15th day of the month that you register, i.e. if you register between the 1st-14th day of month, you may get charged just days after paying your deposit at registration.  (Sorry, there isn't a different way to handle on ultracamp.)

What dates am I signed up for again?
Sign in to our registration system to check what dates you are registered for and wait-listed for. You can also search your email for your  "Jordan Lake Boating Camp" confirmation receipt.

A week that I want to sign up for is full, how does the wait-list work?
If something is full, please join the wait-list if you want to go.  You can sign up for more than one week.  You will be emailed once a spot opens for you with a link that expires in 24 hours.  If you are notified, you'll have 24 hours to complete registration before the next family on the waitlist is contacted.  Please "white-list" my email address: don@jordanlakeboatingcamp.com (sometimes it can go to spam-box when customers are auto-notified via ultracamp)

Can you accommodate children with special needs?

We are not set up to provide direct one-on-one care/supervision for a camper to successfully get through the day. Our counselors are experienced with handling certain types of needs, but feel free to contact us if you'd like more information or have specific questions.

What do you do when there is stormy weather?
If the weather report predicts rain/thunderstorms on the day of the scheduled program, we continue as planned.  If rain falls during the day, then we modify our plans to base under shelter at the Jordan Lake State Park and fish or go out on boat as the weather clears up.  We have fun playing games and having campfires and smores if the rain is heavy.  We constantly monitor the local radar throughout the day and adjust our plans accordingly.  Campers appreciate the variety to the week.  As a rule, if lightning is within 10 miles we are off the water and heading for shelter.   It is no surprise that North Carolina weather seldom goes as planned.   I wish I could count the number of times we had blue skies and nice weather, when the 6:00am forecast was doom and gloom.  Often bad weather doesn't come or comes much later in the day. Of course, if extreme weather, e.g. tropical storm, makes it impossible to ensure the safety of the campers, then an email will be sent to cancel camp that day and issue a pro-rated credit or refund.  This situation is super rare.  Note: for those depending on childcare, we always continue to offer camp at Sun Star Farm so you aren't stuck.

What is your behavior policy?
We strive to provide the highest quality experience for your children and want every camper to feel safe and happy.    On the first morning of camp we teach the "golden rule."  We have a ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY for any form of bullying, verbal or physically, or inappropriate language or content.  Campers are required to cooperate with staff to ensure a positive and safe environment for all.  Never hesitate to call if you have a concern.  We reserve the right to immediately dismiss a camper without a refund if a phone call home doesn't resolve the issue, including cancelling future summer camp weeks.

What is your transfer, cancellation and refund policy?

When you register your child, you are reserving space, time, staffing, and prepaid expenses whether or not your child attends the program.  Our detailed cancellation and refund policy is here and you are required to sign our waiver and policies agreements to complete your registration.  Please let us know if you have any questions, prior to registering.

What if my child has a doctor appointment that day?

Jordan Lake Boating Camp is NOT like other "land-based" day camps.  Late arrivals, early pick ups, no-shows, are very tough to coordinate and impact everyone's camp experience.  We need your help to make camp great...  BEFORE you register, please read:  if you have doctor/dentist appointments, everyone would be grateful if you scheduled it during another week if possible.  We may be able to arrange a 3pm pick up, but that is about it.  Please don't forget lunch boxes and medications at home.  Morning punctuality is very important.  We start at the scheduled time, cover a wide area, and finish at the scheduled time.  If you arrive more than 15 minutes late, we will be en route to somewhere at the lake and you will need to find the group on your own.  Please arrange all special appointments for another week.  Thank you!

What are the Covid-19 procedures?

As of June 2023, we have no special procedures as the pandemic is over.  Finally.
